THE TENRYO FESTIVAL
This is an autumn festival unique to Tenryo Hita,
which was once under the direct control of the
Tokugawa Shogunate. Held mainly in Tsukikuma Park,
where the loca] prefectural magistrate had his.offices,
the splendour of the Tenryo period is recreated in the present,
with the setting up of the magistrate's house,
feudal barriers, and old-fashioned street stalls.
SUMMER FESTIVAL
As a huge circle of dancers takes up the whole street,
onlookers are caught up in the rhythm and atmosphere of
the summer evening dance.
KAPPA ODORI DANCE
(A PREFECTURAL INTANGIBLE CULTURAL TREASURE)
A sacred Shinto dance to pray for abundant crops,
in which young boys dressed as kappa (water imps)
jump and cavort about in time to humorous music.
