A City Steeped in
History
THE CULTURE OF OUR
ANCESTORS LIVES ON TODAY
A row of tiled-roof houses, witness to Hita's
long history. From early times Hita enjoyed:
flourishing trade with Osaka, Edo, and
Nagasaki, being a storage base under Lord
Toyotomi, and being land controlled directly by
the Shogunate during the Edo Period.
The 'Little Kyoto' of Kyushu, Hita, is rich in
historical atmosphere. In addition, the
Kangien, a private school founded by the
famous scholar Tanso Hirose, became one of
Japan's major centers of learning, and sent
many great scholars out into the world.
This cultural heritage gives depth to the Hita
that we know, making it a warm-hearted,
charming town.
